May 22, 2013 —Senator Leone hosts a donation drive outside the State Capitol to collect clothing, personal care items and cash donations to benefit homeless Connecticut veterans and the South Park Inn Veteran Drop-In-Center in Hartford.
As Senate chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am deeply concerned by the high unemployment rate among US Military veterans today.
National labor statistics report an 11.5 percent unemployment rate among all veterans, and that 20 percent of veterans under age 25 are unemployed.
I voted for legislation back in October that will provide employers with a tax credit of $900/month for every veteran they hire.
The federal government is also helping out with a Wounded Warriors Tax Credit of up to $9,600 that will increase existing tax credits for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been unemployed six months or longer.
The federal Returning Heroes Tax Credit also provides up to $5,600 directly to the employers who hire veterans who have been unemployed six months or longer.
Both federal tax credits apply to veterans who began work for their employer after November 21, 2011. For more information on both federal tax credits visait the Office For Veterans Workforce Development Web site.
Senator Carlo Leone was elected in a special election on February 22, 2011 to represent the citizens of the 27th Senate District towns of Stamford and Darien.
Leone previously served in the House of Representatives serving the 148th district of Stamford with pride since 2003.
He was appointed by Speaker of the House Chris Donovan to serve as Deputy Majority Whip. In addition to his leadership role, Leone served in the House as a member of the Finance, Revenue & Bonding, Regulations Review and Transportation Committees.
Prior to that, he served for three terms as the chair of the Regulations Review Committee, was vice-chair of Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee from 2005-2006, and served as vice-chair of the Public Safety Committee from 2003-2004.
Carlo has been involved in passing key legislation during his tenure, such as the $3.5 billion investment in the Transportation Improvement Initiative, legislation creating film tax credits allowing for the growth of the entertainment industry in Connecticut, the establishment of special taxing districts for municipalities to fund the cleanup of contaminated sites for the benefit of the community to foster smart growth and economic development, and also fire sprinkler legislation that was passed in response to the disastrous 2003 fires in Rhode Island and Hartford.
He also has been an active proponent of legislation supporting veterans, including the successful passage of a bill regarding free tuition for surviving members of veterans killed in action.
He is a former member of the Commerce Committee and the Energy & Technology Committee, and the valuable experience has enabled him to broaden his knowledge of the issues important to his constituents and state. In March 2003, he was appointed and continues to serve on the Communications Technology and Interstate Commerce Committee of the National Conference of State Legislators.
Carlo has lived in Stamford for the past 20 years and is an active member of the Stamford community. Prior to being elected to the state legislature, he served on the Zoning Board of Appeals as an alternate member from 2001—2002 and he completed the Stamford Citizen Patrol Program—a course designed to improve community relations between Stamford Citizens and the local Police Force.
He is a member of the Figli di Rose (Sons of Rose) Italian Club in the Springdale section of Stamford, which is one of four major Italian Clubs in Stamford. He has also served as a mentor to a high school student in the New Canaan Horizon program—a nationally recognized mentoring program assisting underprivileged children from middle school to high school.
Carlo earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Sacred Heart University having graduated Summa Cum Laude. Following that, he earned an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from Sacred Heart University.
He is a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served on active duty from October 1981 to February 1987 in the US and European Theater.
Carlo and his wife Karen were married on June 15, 2002 and are the proud parents of a son. In his leisure time, Senator Leone is an avid reader, an outdoorsman who enjoys mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and spending time with his family as much as he possibly can. Both Senator Leone and his family enjoy walking and spending their leisure time at Stamford's Cove Island Park on a regular basis.
