Guilford’s Sandy Ruoff Appointed to State Library Board

Appointment by Connecticut Senate President championed by Senator Kennedy

Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr. (D-Branford) announced that Sandy Ruoff, Director of the Guilford Free Library since 1987, has been named to the prestigious State Library Board by Senate President Martin Looney. Citing Ruoff’s many years of experience in Guilford and her important professional accomplishments in library administration, Senator Kennedy championed her appointment and praised her capabilities.

“Sandy Ruoff is one of the most passionate, dedicated and hard-working members of our community. She has impacted and enriched the lives of thousands of local residents by her leadership of the Guilford Free Library. During her long career, local libraries have evolved from quiet nooks of solitude and study to important centers of cultural and community activities. Sandy has been in the forefront of modernizing and re-envisioning the changing functions of our libraries and incorporating our community’s desires to expand library services beyond the traditional function of loaning books,” said Senator Kennedy. “Our state’s planning efforts will benefit greatly from Sandy’s enthusiasm, know-how and leadership. We are all beaming with pride knowing that Sandy and Guilford are setting the pace of future library administration.”

“I’ve been involved with libraries one way or another for over 50 years, including the Guilford Free Library for over 40 years. I have been in attendance at State Library Board Meetings in various capacities and I respect the work that the Board does. I am very pleased to become a part of that body and am looking forward to getting to work,” said Sandy Ruoff.

“Guilford Library Board is delighted to share the wonderful resource that is Sandy Ruoff with the state library community. Knowing the tremendous asset that she has been to our local library scene, we know that she will serve the state with diligence and distinction,” said Bonnie Garmisa, President of the Guilford Library Board.

“During Sandy’s tenure as director our library has become one of the most renowned and state-of-the-art libraries in Connecticut. Guilford is so fortunate to have had Sandy at the helm of our library for decades and I’m confident that she will bring her immense talents to the State Library Board to benefit all libraries in our state,” said Representative Sean Scanlon (D-Guilford).

The State Library Board works to uphold and improve the quality of Connecticut’s 169 public libraries. It is charged with advising local libraries on planning and development efforts, maintaining a library service for the blind and other persons with disabilities, developing the Connecticut Digital Library and more.

The State Library Board also administers grants for the improvement of local libraries. Recently, the Guilford Free Library received a $17,440 grant from the State Library Board that will be used to install high-speed fiber connections to the Connecticut Education Network. This grant was the product of legislation passed in 2015, which made appropriations for grants-in-aid for high-speed connections to the Connecticut Education Network.
