State Senator Thomas P. Gaffey (D-Meriden) today received a 100 percent rating — a perfect score — from the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV). The 2009 scorecard is provided annually, this year on votes recorded on 19 qualifying bills. Senator Gaffey’s rating reflects his support and advocacy for those environmental initiatives.
Senator Gaffey is one of 14 senators to earn a 100 percent ranking. The CTLCV used bills that address among other things inland wetlands regulation and smart growth strategies, the use of so-called ‘green’ cleaning materials in schools, and pesticide use in and around daycare centers.
“In my private sector career I work to maximize statewide recycling efforts to keep Connecticut ahead of the pack in that department; as an elected official I realize clean air, pure water, and open space are much easier to protect than to try and restore, and I vote with that in mind,” Senator Gaffey said. “These quality-of-life issues must remain a priority if Connecticut is to prosper in the future.”
The CTLCV cited two major successes in this year’s legislative session. One is the additional protection put in place for children, in terms of guidance toward ‘green’ cleaning products and strict pesticide restrictions. The other is preservation of Clean Water Act priorities and funding. Senator Gaffey has long supported both.
“I have often described the twofold benefits of environmental initiatives aimed at children, because we not only protect the health and well-being of our next generation, but in doing so we encourage the children we protect to become the environmental stewards of the future,” Senator Gaffey said. “As far as the Clean Water Act is concerned, I’ve been an outspoken advocate for its provisions since it was first enacted, after I was part of Governor William O’Neill’s environmental team.”
Senator Gaffey is presently serving his eighth term in the General Assembly. He is the Senate Chairman of the legislature’s Education Committee and vice-chair of the Select Committee on Aging. He serves on the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding and Legislative Management Committees as well.
