New Haven Nets Historic Preservation Grants

State Senators Looney and Harp say grants will help preserve city’s heritage and monitor local treasures

Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney (D-New Haven) and Senator Toni Harp (D-New Haven) say the City of New Haven and two local non-profit organizations will receive Historical Preservation Technical Assistance Grants.

The grants recipients are:

  • New Haven Museum for a conditions assessment of Whitney Avenue Headquarters ($10,000).
  • City of New Haven for GIS mapping of monument, memorials, and public art ($5,750).
  • New Haven Preservation Trust for creation of a database of records and images of structures listed on the State Historic Resource Inventory ($2,500).

“The grants will help ensure that New Haven’s history isn’t neglected,” said Senator Looney. “Sometimes it takes modest investments to protect and preserve our local treasures. I’m pleased that the General Assembly and Gov. Rell have been able to work together on this important initiative.”

“As one of Connecticut’s first and most influential cities, with legacies in commerce, education, and civil rights, New Haven’s prominent place in American history is both renowned and assured,” Senator Harp said. “But the value of that history is in the sharing: these welcome grants will help catalog, preserve, and then pass along to future generations the rich tradition of New Haven and her residents.”

Forty-one non-profit organizations and municipalities in Connecticut received Historic Preservation Technical Assistance Grants this year. The Connecticut Trust for Historical Preservation says that every grant, “ . . . creates one or more short term jobs that employ architects, structural, mechanical and civil engineers, historic and preservation consultants, energy use consultants, technology firms and planning companies.”

The grants are funded by the Connecticut General Assembly, The Connecticut Humanities Council and the Commission on Culture and Tourism.
