Senator Slossberg’s Capitol Corner: In Your Corner

A column in the Orange Times

As your state senator, my job isn’t just to vote on laws, but to serve as your advocate in government. My favorite part of this job, and often the most important, is to stand on the side of my neighbors in Milford, Orange, West Haven and Woodbridge and fight for the fair treatment of our communities.

Over the last month, hundreds of people signed my petition to restore WFSB, the CBS affiliate in Connecticut, to the air for Optimum Cable customers in Milford, Orange and Woodbridge. WFSB had has been off the air since early January 2017 due to a contract dispute with Cablevision, which provides Optimum Cable. Many of your called my office or spoke to me at events. Together we got organized, and succeeded in twisting the arms of WFSB and Cablevision until they did the right thing and stopped using us as a bargaining chip in their negotiation and restored full cable service.

Earlier this year another lengthy battle with a telecommunications giant came to an end. I have been working with a group of West Haven residents to prevent Verizon from installing an unwanted and potentially dangerous “canister antenna” in a densely populated neighborhood. The families who live around the proposed site of this antenna contacted me last year, and since then we have been working to find a better location for it. In February we became the first community ever to win a fight like this, but I hope we won’t be the last. I introduced legislation that will give a voice to community members who are opposed to these antenna installations. Allowing them to become involved in the siting process and ensure that the chosen location works for the company that wants it and the Connecticut residents who will live with it.

My goal is to always be on your side, ready to help. If you and your neighbors are being taken advantage of or treated unfairly, please don’t hesitate to reach out. The above examples show what can happen when we work together to advocate for our communities. Getting organized and speaking out works. If you have a problem and need help, I would be happy to speak with you about it. I keep an open door policy at my office, so please do not hesitate to contact me.
